The fact is we don’t know what we don’t know. So where do we begin to find out what we don’t know? What are some things everyone should know, especially those who may not have great mentors and guidance? Here goes;
1. It begins within. Know your values and be clear on what matters most to you. If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.
2. Develop good communication skills. You’re going to have to work well with others and they aren’t mind readers and neither are you.
3. Learn how to ask questions and listen actively. You have two ears and one mouth for a reason.
4. Develop a growth mindset and understand the importance of learning from mistakes, not only your own mistakes, but learn from the mistakes of others so you don’t repeat them.
5. Practice self-care and maintain a healthy lifestyle, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
6. Stay organized and manage your time effectively. Time is valuable. Live like every minute matters.
7. Understand the power of networking and build relationships. Your network is your net worth. Your income is the average of that of the five people your spend the most time with.
8. Develop problem-solving skills and be creative in your approach to challenges. People pay good money for solutions to their problems, so you can see why problem solving skills is valuable.
9. Develop a plan for your career and financial goals. Sure, life happens while you’re planning your life but prior planning prevents poor performance. Set short term and long term goals. Plan to retire from having to work to be able to do the work that is most meaningful and rewarding to you. Plan to save, to build an emergency fund to cover 3-6 months of your expenses. And to reduce bad debt (debt that does not produce income). Plan to invest, to invest in yourself and your skills, knowledge and experience. You are an asset worth investing in!
10. Stay curious and never stop learning. Stay plugged in and aware of what’s going on in the world around you and what’s coming in the near future. Don’t be afraid to ask a professional for advice and direction or even mentorship. Take qualified advice for what it is. Take unqualified advice for what it is.
